The show went on…. despite the chaos!
A falling branch, torrential rain and traffic chaos…… did they ruin our Open Day?
Of course not!
The day started a bit damp but the committee was busy setting up the Club, the food had arrived, tables and chairs were sorted. Then came the show stopping news – there was a dangerous tree branch on the track, cars had to be moved immediately….. with only a few minutes before the show was due to begin.

WhatsApp messages and emails were sent and phone calls made to say park in the village.
But our members are made of tough stuff. They dumped their cars, headed off on foot and the day was saved.
A huge thanks to those who made it through. The whole day was a super event with many of the groups showing what they offered, there was even padel on the tennis court and the sun made an appearance.

There was a delicious lunch, the choir sang and safe to say, everyone had a marvellous time!

And thank you all for your lovely feedback….
“Thank you, it was a really good day despite everything.”
“It was a lovely afternoon! Very well attended…fabulous food and amazing people. Such an awesome group to be a member of. Thanks to all who made it possible.”
“Thanks…It was a great success all round despite the adversity!”
“Thank you to all the committee who kept their nerve and soldiered on. And thank you for the lovely lunch.”
From the committee…..it was a pleasure!
A bit of heritage……and some beer.

Harsha’s recipe
Mumbai Frankie
This is a current trending street food recipe on the streets of Mumbai although I’m not sure how it’s got the name Frankie! Basically it is a roti/paratha wrap filled with a spicy potato patties. I have made the patties (tikki) using frozen peas, capsicums and onions but you can add any other veggies or carrots, spinach, sweetcorn etc.

Ingredients – makes two wraps
Two medium potatoes boiled and mashed
A handful of frozen peas boiled and roughly mashed
A couple of tablespoons of peppers finely chopped
One small onion finely chopped
A teaspoon of ginger and green chilli paste (optional)
One teaspoon of chilli sauce(optional)
A handful of fresh coriander (flat leaf parsley is also fine)
Half a teaspoon of garam masala
A squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Salt to taste
2 wraps (I used chapati which I made but shop bought wraps are fine)
Shredded lettuce and grated carrot
Chilli sauce of your choice
Cucumber raita or plain yogurt with salt and cumin powder added to it.
Method
In a pan saute the onion in a touch of oil and once translucent add the peppers for a minute or so. Take off the heat add the mashed potato, any other veggies and all the spices. Mix properly, then form the mixture into flat patties and fry them on a flat frying pan with a little oil.
Spread some shredded lettuce/carrots on a wrap. Place the warm patties and top with lettuce and raita and maybe some chilli sauce. Make it into a roll and enjoy with some salad, or if you’re being naughty then potato wedges! I had mine with some soup.

Get your u3a online
Interest Groups Online (IGO) is the u3a movement’s national online community — a virtual equivalent of a local u3a but entirely online. Like all u3a activities, IGO groups are member-led and member-run, offering a friendly, informal space to learn, share and socialise from the comfort of home.
- A wide range of interest groups, covering subjects such as languages, history, music, literature, science, creative writing, technology and much more. Many groups are interactive, and members are encouraged to take turns sharing skills, leading discussions or presenting topics that interest them. The ethos is informal learning for fun and shared fulfilment, not for qualifications or taught courses.
- IGO members also have access to u3a’s broader national online learning programme, which includes additional talks, workshops and competitions open to all u3a and IGO members. Annual fee £12 join. Go to https://www.u3a.org.uk/what-we-do/learning/interest-groups-online/how-to-join-igo for more information.
