June 2023

A grand day out!

There’s got to be a great caption!

I thought we would have bit of fun this month. So I am starting off with a caption competition.

The social group had an amazing – and very hot – day out at the RHS Bridgewater and came home with lots of gardening ideas.

However, the day did prove a little too much for a couple of our members.

Here they are having a quick snooze in the sunshine.

What a great photo – and what a great opportunity for a caption.

Please send them via the form at the bottom of this newsletter and I will print the best next month.

In the meantime here are some more photos of the visit.

Inspire Invites

Do you have a hobby or activity that you would like to try out and add to our U3a offer? As part of our partnership with ‘Inspire Invites’ we are looking for people interested in running groups for U3a members plus the wider ‘Inspire Invites’ community on Fridays.

These would be based at the Chorley youth zone by the bus and train stations. The facilities are wide ranging including; sports halls, climbing wall, music studio, gym, kitchen, beauty facilities, craft room and general activity rooms. They also have a cafe.

The facilities will be available free of charge for those running the classes as well as those taking part in the activities. It is a real opportunity for us to link up with others and try out new activities for free using first class facilities. So if you are interested please let one of the committee members know and we’ll arrange to have a chat with you to explore further.

July’s speaker is an old friend

It is with great pleasure that we welcome back an old friend for next month’s speaker meeting.

Boyd Harris needs no introduction and as we all know he is a walking encyclopedia about Withnell Fold and local history as well as having an incredible library of photographs.

The talk on Wednesday, July 5, will actually be a film show about one of the village’s landmarks: “Fine Paper-making in Withnell Fold”. Hopefully, if the weather stays fine there may a stroll through village to view locations.

Don’t forget the talk starts at 10.30 in the clubhouse so get there early for a cuppa and biscuit. Admission is £2.

Just the weather for a walk

Smile for the camera!
Get out of my field!

The walking group certainly picked some good days for a stride around our glorious countryside. Here they are at Great Hill and White Coppice where they encountered a curious youngster. The group was also joined by five members of Southport u3a who looked as though they enjoyed the terrain.

How quickly the weather changes.

Meanwhile, on an earlier walk, Dean had his trusty camera to capture this lovely landscape view in Adlington.

Power of the Mind

Summer sessions

A quick reminder that following the successful talk on the Power of the Mind, Dr Debbie Pope is now doing five further weekly group sessions from the end of July to end of August.

Each session is stand alone and explores different areas of the mind including; memory, language, problem solving, decision making and emotional intelligence. If you haven’t signed up yet just go to the WPVU3A activities website and let us know which ones you are interested in.

Can you help?

We are a friendly lot at WPVu3a and we want to make sure everyone gets a warm welcome. With that in mind, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to help out at speaker meetings to act as meeters and greeters.

We all know it can be daunting entering a room full of strangers, so we want some friendly faces to say ‘hello’ to new and even existing members and introduce them to other members. Interested, drop me a line at the bottom of the newsletter.

A reminder…….

For members already enjoying all the great groups, a little reminder. While the summer holidays are only a few weeks away, could you all let your group convenors know if you can’t make a session please.

Don’t struggle

Anyone who struggles with the website can find help by clicking on the Help option from the website menu.

Anyone having difficulty getting to meetings, we can reserve a parking spot right next to the clubhouse. Just let us know.

Don’t forget your can get all the national u3a news as well as lots of info about different courses etc at the national u3a website.

We hope you have enjoyed this month’s newsletter. If you have any contributions please contact Lynn using the form below.
