Campaigns and Political Activity Policy

West Pennine Villages u3a (WPV u3a) is a charity focused on learning, social connection, and community engagement for people in later life. As a charity, WPV u3a remains politically neutral.

1. Political neutrality

  • WPV u3a does not support, oppose, or promote any political party or candidate
  • WPV u3a groups and members must not use u3a meetings, events, communication channels, or resources to campaign for political parties or individuals

2. Issue-based and educational discussions on political or social issues are permitted as part of learning activities

  • These must be, non-partisan, and aimed at understanding—not persuading

3. Member Conduct

  • Members may hold personal political views but must not present these as WPV u3a’s position
  • Political leaflets, petitions, or fundraising are not permitted at WPV u3a venues or activities

4. External Speakers

  • Speakers discussing political topics must present information impartially
  • Party political representatives, such as MPs, councillors or political representatives, may only attend in a non-campaigning, educational capacity

5. Campaigning on Charitable Issues

WPV u3a may, at the committee’s discretion, engage in limited campaigning relevant to its charitable purpose (e.g., adult education access), but never in a way that supports a party or candidate

This policy will be reviewed annually or earlier if required by changes in legislation or u3a guidance
