The Shakespeare group began meeting in April and will meet for six weeks at a time about three times a year in order to study a play. Five weeks will be for study with the sixth week for watching a DVD of a good stage production of that particular play. We meet on Fridays in the clubhouse from 1.30 – 3.30 with an extra hour on the final session. The group will not meet on the particular Friday once a month when another group uses the clubhouse at that time.
Please don’t be put off by the word ‘study’. There won’t be tests or homework! It doesn’t matter if you are already familiar with, or a newcomer to, the plays. Maybe you haven’t read or seen a Shakespeare play since you were at school – no matter – it’s never too late to start! It’s all about getting to know and understand the plays. What I try to do is help make Shakespeare accessible and enjoyable. I’ll concentrate on the plays, but later on, if we find there’s an appetite to look at some of the sonnets then I’ll arrange a couple of sessions.
The way I do this to use good quality audio productions which we listen to whilst reading the text, I also create PowerPoint slides, use film clips and there will be discussion. The first play is Macbeth and in September/October we will study A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Dates are on the calendar.
