An invite to our showcase of the year

It’s one of the most important days on WPVu3a’s calendar – the annual Open Day.

Every year we have thrown open the doors – and the tennis courts and croquet lawn among other things – to give everyone a taste of what’s on offer. It’s also a thank you to all our members.

This year’s date for you diary is Wednesday,  September 16, between 12-2.30pm at the clubhouse.

Please come along to see what other groups are doing – and why not bring along anyone whom you think might benefit from joining us.

Our chair Anne said: “It’s an opportunity to try out  something so maybe bring suitable footwear.”

Of course there will be light refreshments served throughout.

*If anyone could help in the kitchen serving drinks for half an hour please let Ann know at ann.furlong@westpenninevillagesu3a.org.uk

Your committee

Your u3a wouldn’t really function without its committee.

It meets once a month and usually has a full agenda covering anything from organising the Open Day to hearing treasurer Paul’s financial report.

We have recently had two new additions to the committee, co-opted members Elaine and Enid as well as a new groups convenor Pam Kirkham.

And to prove that it’s not all cups of tea and chat, here are some photographs to show the committee hard at work.

Strollers take to the Tramway

The recently opened and fully restored Tram Bridge in Preston was the destination for the 20 members of the SOSS group who enjoyed a stroll across what has become a popular attraction.

The strollers had followed a route through Lower Penwortham and along the banks of the River Ribble before crossing the bridge.

The trip ended with well-earned cold drinks and ice creams by the New Continental hotel.

The group’s next outing will be to Lytham Hall on Saturday, September 5. If you want to join the group, check it out on the website.

Taking to the hills….

A rest in the sun

The walking group meanwhile headed east to tackle Black Hill, Sabden Brook and Churn Clough reservoir in East Lancashire.

It’s a kind of magic!

We are giving our speakers a month off for September, but there will be literally some magic at October’s Speaker meeting.

Peter Turner, a professional magician with more than 20 years’ experience regularly performs highly entertaining magic show talks and demonstrations to u3as, Rotary, Women’s Institute and after dinner events.

And he will be entertaining our members on Wednesday, October 7.

Within the logical world we live in, there is also a mysterious world. Peter will bring a piece of this mysterious world with him.

He performs top quality magic at the highest level delivered with natural humour – and his sleeves rolled up making his magic more mystifying and magical..

Please arrive around 10.15am for a prompt start at 10.30am. Entry is £2 which can be paid either by cash or by using the card machine.

Level access to the clubhouse is available, just let Lynne Robinson know if you need assistance. If a car park space needs to be reserved for you next to the venue please let me know. Otherwise parking is in the usual places.

And to finish…..we now have 288 members!

Get your u3a online

Interest Groups Online (IGO) is the u3a movement’s national online community — a virtual equivalent of a local u3a but entirely online. Like all u3a activities, IGO groups are member-led and member-run, offering a friendly, informal space to learn, share and socialise from the comfort of home.

  • A wide range of interest groups, covering subjects such as languages, history, music, literature, science, creative writing, technology and much more. Many groups are interactive, and members are encouraged to take turns sharing skills, leading discussions or presenting topics that interest them. The ethos is informal learning for fun and shared fulfilment, not for qualifications or taught courses.
  • IGO members also have access to u3a’s broader national online learning programme, which includes additional talks, workshops and competitions open to all u3a and IGO members.  Annual fee £12 join. Go to https://www.u3a.org.uk/what-we-do/learning/interest-groups-online/how-to-join-igo for more information.

Don’t forget the drop in!

It’s a great way to meet old and new members. It is free as it is included in your membership fee. Come along for a proper brew – and biscuits! From 11 am until noon at the clubhouse at Withnell Fold Sports and Social Club on Wednesdays. Please check the online calendar.
